A Scheduling Algorithm in a Core Optical Router with Heterogeneous Traffic

چکیده
Recent advances in optical networking reveal that large-scale optical networks supporting heterogeneous traffic may soon become economical as the underlying backbone in wide area networks, in which optical routers play a key role. One big challenge in the design of future large-scale optical systems is packet scheduling for the core optical routers. The optical router essentially is a delay system with packets waiting at its ingress queues. A scheduler is necessary to allocate resources so that satisfactory delay and jitter performance of different types of traffic can be achieved and system capacity is efficiently utilized. This paper develops a nonblocking scalable scheduling algorithm and presents related performance evaluations in a multi-service high capacity core optical router. The proposed algorithm is based on a heuristic approximation of a Linear Integer Programming model. It is shown that the heuristic solution is ‘close’ to the optimal solution ‘most of the time’, yet it is much easier to implement.

The Tiny Tera is an all-CMOS 320 Gbps, input-queued ATM switch suitable for nonATM applications such as the core of an Internet router. The Tiny Tera efficiently supports both unicast and multicast traffic. Instead of using optical switching technology, we achieve a high switching-bandwidth by using less expensive and proven CMOS technology. Because of limitations in memory and interconnectionb...
متن کاملDistributed Router Architecture for Packet-Routed Optical Networks
A new proposal for an optical packet-routed network based on a distributed router architecture in a WDM network is described. Buffering, scheduling and wavelength assignment functions are carried out in routers located at the edge of the network. The destination address is encoded by a given wavelength and allows wavelength-routing in optical core routers. This approach avoids processing and ad...

A new scheme for packet transaction in a router is used, which provides load sharing among multiple network processors for various traffic patterns by introducing an OCGRR scheduler at the output port of the core router and multiprocessors . We introduce Proactive Reservation-based Switching (PRS)—a switching architecture for IP/WDM networks based on Labeled Optical Burst Switching. PRS achieves packet delay and loss performance comparable to that of packet-switched networks, without requiring large buffering capacity, or burst scheduling across a large number of wavelengths at the core routers. PRS combines proactive channel reser...
متن کاملAn Efficient Genetic Algorithm for Task Scheduling on Heterogeneous Computing Systems Based on TRIZ
An efficient assignment and scheduling of tasks is one of the key elements in effective utilization of heterogeneous multiprocessor systems. The task scheduling problem has been proven to be NP-hard is the reason why we used meta-heuristic methods for finding a suboptimal schedule. In this paper we proposed a new approach using TRIZ (specially 40 inventive principles). The basic idea of thi...
